Nonmedical use of anabolic steroids can lead to serious side-effects and severe health problems. Abuse increases the risk of adverse psychiatric symptoms and other severe, even irreversible health problems.

Abuse can potentially harm the liver, elevate blood pressure and increase harmful lipids in blood. Reported effects are also irreversible cardiovascular toxicity, renal damage, severe acne and trembling. In men testicles can shrink and sperm count is reduced. Affected men can develop infertility, baldness and increased risk of prostate cancer.
Therapeutic application and dosage is aimed to normalize low blood levels of testosterone and reduce symptoms of hypogonadism. Medical treatment of hypogonadism does not lead to anabolic overdosing or dependence.
