Point-Counterpoint: TRT has a major impact on prostate health, pro and con

Prostate cancer is one of the greatest fears among doctors and patients alike, and a common reason hypogonadal men are being denied testosterone therapy. Dr. Crawford presents how this testosterone-prostate cancer dogma arose, the correlation between endogenous testosterone levels and risk of prostate cancer and BPH, and prostate outcomes with testosterone therapy.

He explains the saturation model which relates testosterone levels to prostate growth or PSA, and underscores that even most hypogonadal men have already reached the saturation point, and therefore testosterone therapy allows hypogonadal symptoms to resolve without effect on prostate cancer. He supports this with data from several studies showing that testosterone therapy in hypogonadal men with successfully treated prostate cancer has no detrimental prostate effects.

Dr. Crawford puts the controversy of testosterone and prostate cancer in perspective by underscoring that hypogonadism puts a man at a far higher and well documented risk of metabolic syndrome, heart disease and diabetes. He feels the 2012 EAU Guidelines on Male Hypogonadism are more accurate and in line with the totality of research data than the conservative 2010 US Endocrine Society Guidelines.

Dr. Crawford is an internationally recognized expert in prostate cancer, benign prostate hypertrophy (BPH) and other urologic cancers. He is a distinguished Professor of Surgery, Urology, and Radiation Oncology, and head of the Section of Urologic Oncology at the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus. He has been recognized as one of the Best Doctors in America, one of the Best Cancer Doctors, one of the Top 20 Urologists in the country by Men's Health Magazine, and recently selected as the Healthcare Provider of the Year in the Denver Metro Area by The Denver Business Journal.
